ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Travis Wood of Bryant ended up with another no decision for the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds) of the AAA International League on Tuesday but, in the process, he turned in his finest performance of the season.The Bats needed 15 innings to get past the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies), 2-1.
Over the first eight innings, Wood allowed one run on just two hits and two walks while striking out 11. Of his 107 pitches, 69 were for strikes as he lowered his earned run average to 4.47. He retired 22 of the last 24 batters he faced.[more]
The only hits he surrendered were to John Mayberry Jr. In the first, Wood issued both walks to Melvin Dorta and Dewayne Wise with one out. Mayberry singled to left to drive in the lone run of the game for the IronPigs.
Wise was thrown out trying to steal to steal and Wood proceeded to retire the next eight in a row before Mayberry’s one-out double in the bottom of the fourth. The lefty then set down nine straight before hitting a batter. He then finished by retiring the last five batters he faced, four of them, including all three in the bottom of the eighth, on strikes.
