ZEBULON, N.C. — Left-hander Travis Wood of Bryant had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings against the Huntsville Stars on Tuesday night but wound up being the losing pitcher after giving up his lone hit and a walk. He came out of the game and both runs scored on a two-out error. Huntsville held on for a 2-1 win over Wood and the Carolina Mudcats of the Class AA Southern League.
Wood is now 0-2 in three starts for the Mudcats, of the Cincinnati Reds organization. His earned run average, however, is a miniscule 0.57.
On Tuesday, he allowed the one hit, three walks and three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
So far, Wood, the son of Jay and Dena Wood, has worked 15 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs with just one earned, walked nine and struck out nine. Opponents have a collective .132 batting average against him.
In one of his earlier starts, Wood contributed a three-run double for the Mudcats.
Huntsville, a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate, improved to 6-6 in the South Division of the league with the win on Tuesday, Carolina dropped to 5-7 pending their game this afternoon to wrap up the three-game series.
