Freshman Connor Wilson paced the field to lead the Bryant Junior Hornets to a dominating win in the[more] nine teams in the junior division of the annual Hornets Invitational cross country meet at Bishop Park Tuesday.
Connor completed the two-mile course in 11:13.
“He took charge of the race just before the one-mile mark and pulled away for the victory,” noted Hornets coach Steve Oury.
Bryant finished with 37 points with Russellville a distant second with 68 followed by Cabot (78), DeQueen (96) and Conway (136).
“The junior boys were awesome,” Oury added. “We have a lot of talent in this group. Connor looked great getting the win, but lots of guys showed a big improvement since the intrasquad meet.”
The rest of the Junior Hornets’ top seven were eighth grader Charlie Terry (3rd in 11:22), freshman Mark Winn (9th in 11:47), eighth grader Ben Majors (11th in 11:56), freshman Dru Wen (13th in 11:58), freshman Jim Dellorto (15th in 12:14), and eighth grader Stephen Cockmon (21st in 12:34).
“Coach (Rhonda) Hall and Coach (Deanna) Porter are both doing a great job with their runners,” Oury said. “We may have some freshman who move up to the senior high team later in the season, but for now I want them to enjoy this success.”
The Junior Hornets are scheduled to participate in the Bryant Magic Mile in conjunction with Bryant Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 24. They compete next at the Russellville Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1.
