RUSSELLVILLE — The Russellville Whirlwinds seventh and eighth grade basketball teams greeted the Bryant Blue Hornets of Bethel Middle School on Tuesday night with a pair of setbacks.
In eighth grade action, the Whirlwinds put together a 28-point second half to pull away for a 41-23 win.
In the seventh grade game, a 13-2 burst in the third quarter vaulted the Whirlwinds to a 47-28 victory.
For Bethel, Brayden Godwin led the eighth grade effort with 15 points. Hayden Schrader finished with 4. Austin Schroeder and Dyon Ruby added 2 each.
Russellville managed an 8-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and held a 13-9 edge at the half. It was 27-18 going into the fourth quarter.
In the seventh grade game, Russellville held a 12-11 advantage after a quarter. It was 22-19 at the half but the third quarter pushed the lead to 35-21.
Demetrius Sanders scored 11 points for the Hornets. Zachariah Foote had 9 and Austin Crawley 3. Isaac Devine and Josh Blackmon scored 2 each and Evan Barrett had one.
Now 3-2, the eighth grade team is set to play at Cabot North on Tuesday, Dec. 6 along with the seventh grade, which fell to 4-2 this season.
