The Bryant White Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School held the Russellville Whirlwinds to just 1 point in the second quarter of their game at the BMS gym Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Hornets only managed 2 points in the period, which wasn’t enough to make up the ground they needed after Russellville established a 13-6 lead in the first period.
As a result, the Hornets played uphill the whole game on the way to a 29-21 setback.
In fact, Russellville only scored 2 points in the third quarter but it was enough to keep the Whirlwinds ahead. It was 14-8 at halftime and 16-12 going into the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t get off to a great start but we got the game slowed down to the pace we wanted,” said Hornets coach Heath Long. “We held them to 3 points in two quarters but the problem was that we weren’t scoring either.”
Bryant’s inside duo of Blaise Smith (10 points) and Kajuan Robinson combined for 19 points but no one else had more than Daelin Drake’s 2.
“We handled pressure better but still made some mistakes,” Long noted, referencing the team’s struggles against the press of Conway White in the previous game on Monday night. “We will try to get back on track against Cabot south on Saturday.”
The Hornets, now 6-3, will host Cabot South with seventh grade girls and boys games as well as eighth grade girls and boys games starting at 9 a.m.
