FAYETTEVILLE — The Bryant Hornets opened up the 2009 track season with an eighth-place finish out of 24 teams at the ATCA Indoor Invitational at the Tyson Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
Sophomore Tanner Tolbert scored 17.5 of the Hornets 23.5 points, including a first place finish in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.24. Tolbert also placed fourth in the triple jump with a 39-9 effort, and tied for sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20-5.
Other scorers for the Hornets were Chris Brooks in the 60-meter dash (5th in 7.38), and Troy Smith in the high jump (7th in 5-8).
The Hornets were without the services of 400-meter runners Homer Coleman and Daniel Hall, who are both recovering from injuries. Hall and Coleman are two of the fastest returning 400-meter runners from Class 7A.
"This was a good way to start the season,” stated Hornets coach Steve Oury. “Tanner Tolbert had a great meet, especially considering he has been under the weather the last few days.
“We have a really solid group of sprinters, and when we can get Hall and Coleman back healthy we will be that much better,” he added. “We know there were a lot of teams that were not competing Saturday who will be there at the State Indoor meet in three weeks, so we have to keep working to get better.”
