CABOT — Bryant’s Tanner Tolbert was fifth and Troy Smith 11th after the first day of[more] the Arkansas High School Decathlon on Wednesday.
Tolbert, who turned in the best 100 meter dash with a time of 11.11, accumulated 3,819 points. Smith, who tied for the second best high jump, clearing 6 feet, had 3,345 points.
Along with the 100 meter dash and the high jump, the first day of the two-day competition included the long jump, shot put and 400 meter dash. Today, the events are the 110 hurdles, triple jump, discus, pole vault and 1600 meter run.)
Tolbert competed in the 100, long jump and triple jump primarily during the regular season for the Hornets. Smith’s specialties included the hurdles, high jump and pole vault.
Stephen Soerens (4,216 points) and Bradley Culp (3,977) topped the field on the first day, followed by Conway’s Jamarcus Harmony (3,971) and Fort Smith Southside’s Terrill McCoy (3,886).
Tolbert not only scored well in the 100, he garnered 920 points for his long jump of 20-10, the fourth best mark. He threw the shot 38-6 for 514 points, cleared 5-4 in the high jump for 720 and run a 55.13 for 768 points in the 400.
Smith’s 400 time of 54.46 earned 802 points. His 100 of 11.91 produced 727 points and his long jump of 19 feet produced 700 points. In the shot, his throw of 31-04 accounted for 256 points.
