FAYETTEVILLE — Wintry weather kept the Bryant Hornets and Lady Hornets from making the trip to Fayetteville for the State Indoor Track Championships Saturday, but three Hornets athletes who made the trip up on Friday were able to compete. John Winn, Mark Winn, and Austin Vail combined for a total of 21 points, which gave the Hornets a seventh-place team finish. Because of the weather, the meet primarily consisted of northwest Arkansas schools.
John Winn, competing in his first-ever indoor race, earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.94. Mark Winn placed second in the 800-meter run in a new personal-record time of 2:03.26. Vail earned a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.38. Vail also cleared a height of 5’4″ in the high jump for an eighth-place finish.
“It was very disappointing that we were not able to make the trip up there with the whole team,” commented Hornets coach Steve Oury. “We have been working very hard in practice in preparation for this meet and I know Coach (Danny) Westbrook would say the same about the girls team. Both the boys and girls teams had some individuals and relay teams that would have contended to win.
“I’m very glad that the three boys who were already in Fayetteville were able to compete,” he added. “They did a great job of representing Bryant and they all had some outstanding performances. Both of the Winn brothers earned All-State honors and Austin Vail scored in both of his events in his first track meet. I just wish the rest of the Bryant crew could have been there.”
