In their final match before spring break, the Bryant Hornets golf team flashed their potential. At Longhills Golf Club, the Hornets combined on a team score of 149 to top defending state champion Cabot (154) and three other teams.
Of course, head coach Joe Calhoun remained cautious. The Hornets continue to be well aware of the pitfalls that can plague a good team. Last year, they beat Cabot a couple of times during the regular season, then couldn’t make the cut at the conference tournament to earn a shot at the Panthers at state.
Still, they played well, Calhoun allowed. The Hornets’ Marshall Bettoney and Blake Pennington matched Cabot’s Matt Malham for medalist honors. Each carded nine-hole rounds of 36. For Pennington, a senior, it was his best score of the season.
John Bragg carded a 38 and Dallis Clark a 39 to complete the Hornets’ scoring quartet. Caleb Lewis added a round of 43.
Benton was third in the match with a team score of 162 followed by El Dorado at 168 and Sheridan at 170.
The Hornets were scheduled to return to the links Thursday, April 5, at Pine Bluff Country Club before traveling to Harrison for a two-day tourney over the weekend.
