ARKADELPHIA — Freshman Charlie Terry set a new school record for the two-mile junior[more] high distance, placing third overall in a time of 10:49, leading the Bryant Junior Hornets to the team title at the Bob Gravette Invitational at Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday.
The Junior Hornets scored a total of 45 points to finish ahead of Lake Hamilton (54). Pulaski Academy, Little Rock Christian, and Conway rounded out the top five. Nine teams and 174 runners competed in the meet.
“It was great to see us keep the winning tradition going,” stated head coach Steve Oury. “Obviously, Charlie Terry ran a great race, but we had several kids really step up. Ben Majors, Ian Britt, and Zane Pittman really came through for us because Lake Hamilton was running a very good race.”
Majors (5th in 11:38), Britt (7th in 11:45), Pittman (14th in 12:07) along with Michael Higgs (18th in 12:13), Eric Stewart (19th in 12:16), and Chandler Reep (20th in 12:19) rounded out the top seven for the Junior Hornets, with Joey Colvert (21st in 12:19), Stephon Cockmon (22nd in 12:26), Peyton Reber (23rd in 12:27), and Jhorman Cruz (24th in 12:27) all just outside the top 20.
“Terry will probably be moved up to the senior high team, so that will present an opportunity for some other kids to step up,” Oury mentioned.
“Our middle school coaches, Deanna Porter at Bryant, and Kayla Daniels at Bethel, do a great job with their kids and they have a big part in the success of the junior high athletes,” he added. “We couldn’t have the success we have had without them.”
The annual Hornets Invitational is up next for Bryant. The meet is this Thursday at Bishop Park.
