BENTON — The Sport Shop Black Sox of Bryant never quite recovered for a long, arduous[more] seven-run fifth inning by the Ashdown team this morning at the Zone 4 AA American Legion District Tournament at Bernard Holland Park. The Sox tried to scratch and claw back into the lead but fell short 11-9.
That meant they had to come back Saturday afternoon to play an elimination game against Benton Everett. And the Sox never led as Benton brought a stunningly abrupt end to their season with a 9-3 win.
The game was tied 1-1 after two innings but Benton scored three in the third and three more in the fourth, eventually building a 9-1 lead before the Bryant team rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh.
The Sox managed just six hits. C.J. Phillips had a double and Dakota Besancon, Weston Davis, Daniel Darbonne, Justin Emmerling and Nick Kehrees each had singles. Besancon, Kehrees and Tre Davis drove in the runs.
After catching the full seven innings of the morning game, Phillips was the starter on the mound for Sport Shop. He lasted three innings, giving up six runs on five hits. Justin Emmerling relieved in the fourth and went the rest of way, giving up three runs on four hits.
Sport Shop finished its season 14-10.
