Allison Steen scored 12 points and collected 15 rebounds to lead the Bryant White Lady Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School to a 24-12 win over the Conway Blue Lady Cats on Monday night.
The Lady Hornets opened the game with a 10-3 run and closed it with a 10-2 blitz as they improved to 7-6 on the season.
Kalia Walker finished with 6 points, Meagan Chism 4 and Allie Dugan 2.
Walker opened the game with an eight-foot jumper off an assist from Steen who had just pulled down the first of her five offensive rebounds. Dugan followed up with a hoop off a feed from Chism.
Tamia Wiseman scored Conway’s first basket before Steen and Chism scored to make it 8-2. Following a Wiseman free throw, Chism drove for a layup to complete the run.
The Lady Hornets led 10-5 going into the second quarter then didn’t score in the second. But they limited the Lady Cats to a pair of free throws by Taylor McClure and still led 10-7 at the midway point.
Chism fed Steen for the first hoop of the third quarter. McClure answered with a pair of free throws and it stayed 12-9 until the final 30 seconds of the period when Steen connected on a driving jumper to make it a 5-point game going into the final stanza.
Conway Blue trimmed a free throw off the margin in the first minute of the quarter and it stayed 14-10 until the Lady Hornets got back on track, sparked by Steen’s baseline jumper.
After a timeout by the Lady Cats, Bryant White forced consecutive turnovers and cashed in on the second when Steen found the range inside. Conway had three chances to counter before Steen scored again to make it 20-10.
Walker then closed out the game-breaking run with a pair of layups off consecutive steals.
Conway’s Shania Powell scored at the buzzer to set the final score.
