BENTON — The Bryant Lady Hornets freshman track team won five events including a pair of individual first-places by Deborah Shaw and one by Zhania Hall as they opened the season at the Benton Junior High Invitational on Monday, March 7.
The Lady Hornets finished second in the team standings with 94 points. Lake Hamilton won with 159.5 points. Sheridan was third with 91 with Benton fourth (69) and Arkadelphia fifth (69.5) in the 12-team field.
Shaw won both hurdles races. She clocked in at 17.11 in the 100 hurdles with teammate Cassie Ray second in 17.22. In the 300 hurdles, Shaw ran a 51.18 with Ray third in 54.86 and Malori Pendergrass seventh in 57.31.
Shaw and Ray also contributed legs to the winning 4×400-meter relay team. Along with Megan Lee and Jasmine Johnson, they won in 4:45.29.
Hall’s individual win came in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.87. Bryant’s Maggie Laws was eighth in 1:09.21 to add to the scoring. Both then joined with Lee and Bailey Brazil to win the 4×800 in a time of 10:54.20.
Hall was also a part of the Lady Hornets’ second-place effort in the 4×100. She joined Kristin Garner, Charlotte Guevara and Yonni Allen in running a 54.61, nosed out by Benton’s 54.27 for the top spot.
Bryant picked up points from two performances in the discus. Hannah Eason’s throw of 76’10” was good for fifth while Andrea Thomas was sixth in 73’6.5”.
Sarah Rogers added sixth-place points in the 800, finishing in 2:48.56 while Garner cleared seven feet in the pole vault to place sixth.
Shaw scored in two field events. She cleared 4’6” to finish seventh in the high jump and leapt 14’4” in the long jump to gain seventh. Lee was seventh as well with her triple jump of 27’9”.
The Lady Hornets host the annual Bryant Junior Relays on Monday, March 14.
