Bryant freshman Deborah Shaw took high-point honors as the Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team finished third overall at the annual Hornets Junior Relays at Bryant Stadium on Monday.
Shaw accumulated 36 points by winning two events, finishing second in another, added a third-place finish. She also contributed a leg to a winning 4×400 relay effort. Zhania Hall also earned a first-place finish for the Lady Hornets.
Lake Hamilton won the team title with 93 points, edging Conway White (90) and Bryant (88.5). Conway Blue was a distant fourth with 58 points in a huge field of 24 teams. Those included the Bryant White eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School, a Bryant freshman B team and the Bryant Blue eighth graders of Bethel Middle School.
Bethel was 14th with 10 points while Bryant B was 16th with 6, and Bryant White was 17th with 5.
Shaw won the high jump by clearing 5’0” and paced the field in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 51.55. She was second in the 100 hurdles at 16.73. The third-place finish came in the triple jump at 31’6”, finishing just behind teammate Megan Lee who was second at 32’0”.
Lee and Hall teamed up with Shaw and Maggie Laws on a 4:35.86 clocking to win the 4×400.
Hall won the 400-meter run in a time of 1:01.17 and contributed a leg to a second-place finish for the Lady Hornets’ 4×800 team. Bailey Brazil, Lee and Laws provided the other legs that resulted in a 10:56.98 finish, just shy of the winning time of Conway White’s quartet at 10:55.78.
Cassie Ray finished behind Shaw in the 100 hurdles, taking fifth in 17.46. She was eighth in the 300 hurdles in 55.42.
Kristin Garner added fourth-place points in the pole vault, getting over 7 feet. Hannah Eason was seventh in the discus with a throw of 76’8” while Yonni Allen leapt 14’7” to finish seventh in the long jump. Sarah Rogers was seventh in the 800, turning in a 2:49.93 and Brazil was eighth in the 1600 with a time of 6:12.87.
Garner, Charlotte Guevara, Ray and Allen teamed up in the 4×100 relay and finished seventh with a time of 55.20.
The Bryant B team points came from Laws in the 400 where she was sixth in a time of 1:07.58, and Malori Pendergrass who was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.62.
Bethel’s points were accrued by Kailey Richardson in the 300 hurdles (fourth in 54.11), Libby Majors in the 800 (eighth in 2:50.14) and the 4×100 relay team of Mika Johnson, Gracie Seyffert, Dulce Vicente and Majors. They were eighth in 11:22.11.
Bryant Middle School’s points came from Ivory Russ in the discus. Her toss of 79’10” was good for fourth.
The Bryant freshmen will return to competition on Tuesday, March 29, at a meet hosted by Hot Springs Lakeside. The Bryant Blue and Bryant White seventh and eighth grade teams run at Hot Springs on Monday, March 28.
