Scott Schmidt turned in an 18-hole round of 79 to lead the Bryant Hornets golf team in what turned out to be a dual match with Benton at Hurricane Country Club on Monday. A couple of Hot Springs High School golfers played as well.
Benton won the team honors with a combined score of 308 to Bryant’s 331. Benton’s Braden Smith shot a three-over par 75 to earn medalist honors.
In girls play, Benton’s Kristyn Coffman had the low round of 100. Bryant’s Katy Edwards carded a 107 and Maddie Stephens finished at 113.
Schmidt managed a birdie on the par-5 third hole as part of a 39 on the front nine. He had pars on 11 holes including four of the last five.
Drew Darbonne had the Hornets’ second best round at 80. He birdied the par-4 second hole. He shot par on nine holes including the last four and turned in a 40 on the front and back nine.
Tanner Caton turned in a round of 86 as did Zach Byers, who matched Schmidt’s 39 on the front but struggled down the stretch. Landon Allison carded an 87 and Drew Brown finished at 90.
The Bryant girls are set to play at First Tee on Wednesday then the full team will play at Centennial Valley Country Club in Conway on Wednesday, Sept. 23, to finish up the regular season. The Class 7A State Tournament for the girls will be Sept. 28-30 back at Centennial. The boys State tourney will be Oct. 5-7 at Paradise Valley Country Club in Fayetteville.
