CABOT — The Bryant Hornets scored a season high point total of 71 to earn a fifth place[more] finish in the Walmart Invitational at Cabot High School on Tuesday.
Tyler Purtle earned the Hornets only first place finish with new personal record time of 10:29.87 in the 3200 meter run. Purtle also was part of the 3200 meter relay team with Lance Smith, Clifton Hampton, and Austin Middleton that earned a 2nd place finish in a time of 8:41.72.
Conway won the meet with a total of 163 points, followed by Cabot (101.5), Marion (89.5), and West Memphis (83).
“I am very happy for Tyler Purtle,” said Hornets head coach Steve Oury. “He ran a new personal best by 13 seconds and got the win.
“Also, Spencer Sullivan came up big in the 300 meter hurdles,” he added. “That was a breakthrough performance for him. Derrick Dogan did a great job in the triple jump, which was the first time this year he has competed in that event.”
Sullivan was second in the 300 meter hurdles in 42.09 and seventh in the 110 meter hurdles in 17.49.
Dogan was fifth in the triple jump at 40’ 9.5”. He was also third in the long jump at 20′ 8.5” and sixth in the 400 meter dash in 53.69.
Also scoring for the Hornets was:
Caleb Thomas, fourth in the 200 meter dash in 23.46 and fourth in the 100 meter dash in 11.3;
Karon Dismuke, eighth in the shot put at 39′ 10″ and eighth in the discus at 111′ 10.5″;
Hunter Schelle, sixth in the 110 meter hurdles in 17.44 and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles in 43.12;
Clifton Hampton, sixth in the 1600 meter run in 5:01.92;
Lester Lowery, eighth in the 400 meter dash in 54.49.
The 4×100 meter relay team of Dogan, Charles Henson, Travis Royal, and Thomas placed fifth in a time of 44.35 and the 4×400 meter relay team of Dogan, Henson, Royal, and Smith placed sixth in a time of 3:40.18.
“We will be looking to keep building toward the conference meet at the end of the month,” Oury said. “We have a busy week coming up, running in Russellville Friday and then Conway next week.”
