The Bryant Hornets opened up the 2010 cross country season with their annual intrasquad races Tuesday night at Mills Park. A total of 84 boys were divided into three teams, with each runner on the team counting in the scoring. The winning team members were rewarded with coupons from Sonic.
Luke Lindsley, an all-State performer last year, led the way in the individual competition with a new Mills Park 2-mile course record in a time of 10:14.[more]
"Luke Lindsley is looking very good up front,” Oury stated. “We need to work on reducing the gap between Luke and our next runner, which is going to be our focus over the next few weeks of training.
“Some of the senior high kids we were counting on just didn't get it done over the summer, so now we are having to play catch up,” he added. “Hopefully, we can stay injury free as we hit some hard training over the next few weeks."
Tyler Purtle was the top junior high finisher in a time of 12:15. Dru Wen was the top eighth grader in a time of 12:28, and Charlie Terry led all the seventh graders with a time of 13:01.
In the team competition, the White team took top honors with a total of 1,162 points, followed by the Blue team with 1,177, and the Black team with 1,231.
"I was excited to see how well some of our young guys ran last night,” stated Hornets coach Steve Oury. “We have some ninth graders who will be vying for a spot on the senior high team, and there were also some really good efforts from some of the seventh and eighth graders. Coach Deanna Porter at Bryant Middle School and Coach Rhonda Hall at Bethel are doing a great job with the seventh and eighth graders."
The teams will officially open the 2010 season with their annual home meet, the Bryant Invitational, to be held at Mills Park on Saturday, Sept. 14.
