Parks Department to offer flag football, basketball leagues

By Martin Couch

A coach's meeting was held last night for the first year of the Bryant Parks and Recreation flag football league.

With 11 teams already signed up, including one from Hot Springs, coordinator Derek Phillips anticipates more teams signing up before the Nov. 3 deadline.[more]

"We went over the rules," Phillips said. "There are so many different ways to play the game. It's a new thing this year. I've run leagues before in other towns I was in and I wasn't going to do it this year, because we didn't have the field for it. There was a big interest to do it and we got the okay."

Games begin on Nov. 7 and will be played on the soccer field at Bishop Park.

The cost is $400 per team. For more information, call 258-6161.

There will also be a coach's meeting on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Center Board Room of the Community Center at Bishop Park for basketball league coaches, both youth and adult.

"We are doing kindergarten through the second grade leagues, 8th grade to 12th grade leagues and adult leagues," Phillips said. "It depends on the numbers, but we may use all three courts we have. If I have big enough numbers, I definitely will."

The basketball league charge is $30 for members and $40 for non-members in the youth ages. It is $400 per team for the adult league.

For more information or to sign up a team, contact Phillips at 258-6161.
