CABOT — The Bryant Junior Hornets finished off their season with a strong performance at the Walmart Junior High Cross Country Championship on Saturday, placing second with a total of 61 points. Lake Hamilton earned the team title with a total of 29 points. The Junior Hornets’ top five finishers all earned top 30 medals.
Matthew O’Gary led Bryant with a second-place finish in a time of 12:03. Luis Lara was third in 12:22, with Chris Morgan (11th in 12:47), Ben Sellers (17th in 13:04), Joshua Nelson (28th in 13:22), Jake Dreher (33rd in 13:29), and Christian Brack (34th in 13:30) completing the Junior Hornet top seven.
“That was a fun way to finish the season,” stated Hornets coach Steve Oury. “It was true cross country, with a hilly, muddy course and steady rain throughout.
“Matthew O’Gary ran a great race,” he continued. “He was closing on the kid in front of him and just ran out of room. Luis Lara took a spill during the race but recovered nicely. Chris Morgan and Ben Sellers were solid as usual, and Joshua Nelson stepped up for us today as our fifth man.
“Coach Deanna Porter at Bryant Middle School, Coach Denise Smith at Bethel Middle School, and Coach Debbie Clark at the high school have all done a great job this year with these kids,” the coach noted. “Coach (Danny) Westbrook and I are very thankful for all they do.”
