BRYANT–Miranda Mayfield smacked a pair of RBI doubles and pitcher Abby Staton scattered four hits while allowing no free bases as the Bryant Lady Hornets edged Texarkana, 2-0, on Wednesday.
The contest was originally scheduled Tuesday but was moved a day due to wet fields. Both teams tallied four hits, but the Lady Hornets (10-4, 5-1 6A/7A-South) whacked three doubles and also were the beneficiaries of five walks. Meanwhile, Staton kept Texarkana from having the luxury of free passes.
“Abby didn’t have any freebies,” Bryant Coach Debbie Clark said. “She didn’t walk anyone or hit a batter, and I’m so proud of her.”
Of Bryant’s four hits, Mayfield accounted for two of them on her RBI doubles. Staton also doubled and Kaley Coppock singled. The Lady Hornets recorded their first run in the bottom of the second after Breanna Sanders reached on an error, she eventually scored on Mayfield’s first two-bagger. They added a run in the sixth after Sanders walked, went to second on Jordan Williams’ sacrifice and went home on Mayfield’s second double. Staton followed Mayfield with another double but neither were able to score.
“We did three of the five things we want to do,” Clark said. “We scored first, scored with two outs and extended our lead.”
Clark can tell a difference in the Lady Hornets since they went 2-1 in northwest Arkansas over the weekend against Fayetteville and Farmington. She said they seem to be more of a team. When she looks out, she sees a team and not individuals for which the coaching staff is shooting.
“We bobbled a routine play,” Clark said. “Then, we immediately made up for it.”
Senior pitcher Kayla Jolley received results of tests for her knee injury and is cleared to play. She’ll rehab this week then slowly work her way back into practice next week.
Friday, the Lady Hornets travel to Lake Hamilton for a league contest, and Bryant’s twice rained out contest with Sheridan will be played Monday.
