Bryant’s Hunter Mayall and Ben Wells have been invited to play in the the 6th annual Xtra Innings Summer Classic to be held Sunday, June 28, and Monday, June 29, in Jonesboro. Eighty-eight of the top underclassmen will be competing for four teams during the event.
Pro-day will be Sunday morning and will consist of catcher pop times, 60 times, on-field BP and in-door workouts. Sunday night there will be two 10-inning games. The players chosen as pitchers to be their primary position, will each pitch one inning. Monday will consist of four games. Players will get time at various positions and there will be no restrictions on pitchers’ innings.
Mayall and Wells will be part of the Southwest (Red) team.[more]
Approximately 35-40 college coaches and pro-scouts have attended in the past.
The players are divided into four teams. There will be 12 high school coaches who volunteer their time during the event.
Players are nominated and voted on by the high school coaches at their conference meetings. The 12 volunteer coaches and Xi staff then select the teams.
This is not an all-star event. These are players who are deemed to have the ability to play at the next level.Xtra Innings was founded by Pete Prater, Nettleton's baseball coach, Jim Chastain Jewell Chastain.
“Our goal is to promote baseball in Arkansas and get kids the opportunity to play at the next level,” Jewell Chastain said. “For some of these kids, this will be the most coaches and scouts they will see together at one time during their high school careers.”
This year's volunteer coaches:
Southwest-Mark Balisterri, Benton; Jonathan Gosdin, Genoa Central; Tommy Richardson, Woodlawn
Northwest-Jimmy Harris, Shiloh Christian; Jake Hudson, Clarksville; Jeff Harralson, Pottsville
Southeast-Dustin Strube, LR Catholic; Scott Johnson, Star City; Denny Tipton, Sylvan Hills
