HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Brayden Lester and Jake Meaders combined to toss a no-hitter over five innings as the[more] Bryant All-Stars opened the Cal Ripken 9-year-old Southwest Regional with a 9-0 win over George County, Miss., the champions of their state.
The game was called with two out in the bottom of the fifth due to rain.
Bryant, the south Arkansas champions, then met Springdale, the north Arkansas champions and absorbed a tough 6-4 loss.They were set to return to action today at 1 p.m., against Bentonville.
Bryant’s 9-year-old All-Stars include Cade Drennan, Jonathan Hall, Hayden Hilson, Rhett James, Colton Kilgore, Tyler LaRue, Lester, Meaders, Trey McKim, Riley Morales, Shane Small and Gage Stark. Clint Hilson is the manager. He’s assisted by Mike Meadors and Bill Drennan.
Lester worked inito the fourth. He retired the side in order in the first and third. In the second, he walked a pair and there was an error but, with the help of Drennan, his catcher who threw out a would-be base-stealer, he got through it unscathed.
In the fourth, he got the first out then issued a walk. That’s when Meaders came in and struck out the next two. He would pitch around a two-out error in the fifth to close out the victory.
At the plate, Bryant put together two big innings. A three-run second gave them the lead and a six-run fifth put it out of reach.
In the third, Drennan belted a double and Hilson drew a walk. But they remained on base after two were retired. Lester, however, came through with a two-run single to break the ice. LaRue chased him home with an RBI double on an 0-2 pitch.
The fifth-inning uprising began with a single by LaRue. Stark followed with an RBI triple. James drew a one-out walk and Drennan singled to center. Hilson reached on an error and Meaders walked. Wild pitches allowed Drennan and Hilson to score before Morales singled in Meaders to make it 9-0..
