RUSSELLVILLE — The Russellville Lady Whirlwinds held the Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team to 2 points in the second quarter and 3 in the fourth as they held on for a 22-17 win Monday night.
Bryant trailed just 6-4 after a quarter but it was 12-6 at the half. The Lady Hornets rallied in the third quarter, which ended with the Lady Whirlwinds clinging to an 18-14 lead.
Meagan Chism led Bryant with 10 points. Kalia Walker scored 6 and Allison Steen hit a free throw.
“Though we played well defensively, we just had long stretches without scoring in the second and fourth quarters,” said Bryant coach Nathan Castaldi. “We did better against their full-court pressure, but once we beat that we did not make good decisions. We sometimes settled for outside shots instead of working for a better shot.
“They played a match-up zone which gave us some problems but I thought Meagan did a really good job of attacking it and getting inside,” he added.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Monday, Dec. 28, in the annual Kameron Hale Invitational Tournament at Lake Hamilton. They open against White Hall at 12:30 p.m.
