Drawing on the momentum of the booming offense that finished the varsity contest, the Bryant Lady Hornets Junior Varsity scored six times in the first inning and made that stand up for a 6-0 win over the Van Buren JV Thursday night.[more]
After the Pointerettes were retired in the top of the first, Carly Yazza led off for the Hornets with a walk. An out later, Courtney Davidson hit a fly ball that was misplayed by the center fielder scoring Yazza. Stephanie Cyz drew a walk then Brooke Howell hit a 2-1 pitch to right center field for an RBI single. Cyz followed Davidson home on an errant throw from the center fielder.
Bethany Smith lined a double to left field and ended up scoring thanks to a pair of errant throws. Taylor Chapman drew a walk and Hollie Hill was hit by a pitch, to put runners at first and second. Ashlynn Lessenberry laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Chapman and Hill up before Yazza made her second plate appearance of the inning. She drew a walk to load the bases for Jackie Hill who reached on an infield hit scoring Chapman.
Davidson returned to the plate with the bases loaded and, on a 2-0 count, she took a fast ball to deep left field that appeared to be hit very well but hung in the air too long and was caught ending the scoring for the Lady Hornets.
Smith was the winning pitcher working four scoreless innings and giving up only 2 hits and three walks while striking out 13 batters.
The Lady Hornets JV heads to Benton this weekend for a jamboree. They play at 9 and 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., at the new Benton Panther high school field.
