SHERIDAN — As expected, the Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team notched win No. 25 on Saturday in the first round of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference. The Lady Hornets, seeded No. 1 from the South Division, eased to a 44-12 win over Russellville West’s Lady Whirlwinds, the No. 8 seed from the North Division.
The win sets up a rematch with the rival Benton Lady Panthers in the second round on Monday at 6:30 p.m. It’ll be the fourth time the Saline County rivals have squared off this season. Bryant has won the previous three including a 37-25 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams just last Thursday.[more]
Against Russellville West, the Lady Hornets took the mystery out of the outcome with a 24-2 blitz in the first quarter. They led 33-5 at the half, 42-10 through three quarters.
McKenzie Adams led Bryant with 15 points. Courtney Davidson had 7, McKenzie Rice and Logan Davis 5 each. Lauren Buck and Kiara Moore added 4 each with Whitney Meyer and Kristen Scarlett contributing 2 apiece.
“I told the girls, no matter what happens we’ve got to make sure that we’re preparing ourselves for the rest of the tournament,” commented Lady Hornets coach Eric Andrews. “So, we came out with a lot of intensity. Even when we got out of our press, we were challenging ourselves in the half-court defense. I said let’s try to have perfect defensive possessions. Make sure we contain people, we don’t foul and let’s make sure we put a body on somebody every time. That’s stuff we’ve been focusing on a lot in practice. We wanted to really contain people without our backside help having to rotate as much and we did a good job of that.”
