FAYETTEVILLE — Senior Caitlyn Bell and junior Hannah Shelby each broke 20 minutes for a 5K to highlight the performance of the Bryant Lady Hornets at the annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival at the University of Arkansas Saturday.
Bell ran 19:46 and Shelby turned in a 19:55 to finish 53rd and 57th, respectively, as the Lady Hornets finished 21st in a 61-team field that included 462 runners. The meet, annually one of the largest in the central part of the country, draws elite teams from several states. Bryant was fifth among teams from Arkansas with 619 points.
Talyn Billins was Bryant’s third runner, finishing 120th overall with a time of 20:33. She was followed by Sydney Wilson (218th, 21:25), Lauren Ackley (227th, 21:34), Rachel Curtis (230th, 21:39), Reagan Smith (323rd, 22:46), and Alanna Cordova (366th, 23:24).
“I was very proud to see Caitlyn and Hannah run under 20 minutes for 5K in this meet,” said Bryant coach Danny Westbrook. “In such a huge field, it is sometimes hard to maneuver around people. Their time today puts them in a top group of elite female runners in the state of Arkansas.”
