CONWAY — The Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team finished as the runner-up at a tournament held in Conway on Saturday.
By winning seven of the eight games in pool play, the Lady Hornets advanced to the single-elimination tournament for the championship where they advanced to the finals by knocking off Vilonia, Benton and Little Rock Christian. They won all three best-of-three matches 2-0.
In the finals, they ran into Woodland, the only team at the tournament which had handed the Lady Hornets a loss in a game (during pool play when they split. Woodland captured the championship.
In the final, McKenzie Adams led Bryant with two kills and two blocks.[more]
Against Little Rock Christian, Brooke Howell and Hannah Rice each served up two aces while Courtney Davidson contributed a pair of blocks.
Adams had four blocks and McKenzie Rice five kills in the win over Benton. Hannah Rice served for points 1 through 3 and 16-18 in game one of the match. She then served for points 13 through 16 in the second game. Davidson served points 7 through 12 and Adams closed it out with points 18-22.
Against Vilonia, Adams served for Bryant’s surge from 18-23 in the first game. In the second, McKenzie Rice served up points 6-9 and 20-23. Hannah Rice and Adams contributed four kills. Howell had three assists and Davidson pitched in with two bocks and four assists.
The top three teams from each of the four pools advanced to the championship round. Bryant opened pool play by defeating Little Rock Episcopal. In the first game of the match, McKenzie Rice got on a roll in service and the Lady Hornets put together a run from point 9 to 25 to finish out the contest. In the second game, Hanna Rice served for points 2-8, Alyssa Anderson took it from 10-16 and McKenzie Rice pushed it from 19 to 23.
In the second match, the Lady Hornets defeated the Conway Bob Courtway Middle School team. In the first game, Adams served from 9-14 and Howell to it from 16-20. Game two featured runs by Adams (7-10) and Howell (12-15) again.
Against Woodland, the Lady Hornets lost the first game 23-25 but came back and won the second game with Anderson serving for points 1-5 and 16-18. McKenzie Rice had runs from 9-12 and 20-23. Adams, Davidson and McKenzie Rice each had three kills.
To wrap up pool play, the Lady Hornets dismissed Beebe, 25-15, 25-8. In the opener, Anderson got the Lady Hornets rolling with points 2-6 then finished it up serving for points 22-25. Adams had a run from 9-15. In game two, Adams took it from 6 to 14 and Sara McPherson closed out the win with service from points 21-25. Tyler Platt contributed four kills in the match.
The Lady Hornets were scheduled to return to play in the South Division of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference on Monday at Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Little Rock before hosting Sheridan on Thursday.
