JACKSONVILLE — The Bryant Junior Hornets 9- and 10-year old team kicked off its 2013 Central Arkansas Youth Football League season with a defensive masterpiece against the Jacksonville Maroon Wildhawgs 20-0 on Saturday.
The team is coached by Tim Adams, D.J. Miller, Eric Nicholas, Lee Ledbetter and Greg Riggs. Members include Aiden Adams, Hayden Brent, Gavin Burton, Christian Cain, , Zach Feimster Brayden Godwin, Will Hanson, Austin Ledbetter, Trey Miller, Tyler Nicholas, Hart Penfield, Logan Pritchard, Hayden Purdy, Bryce Rankin, Ryan Riggs, Braden Robinson, Cameron Scarlett, Turner Seelinger and Kory Shelnut.
Bryant got the scoring started on a 7-yard carry by Nicholas on the opening drive of the game after Cain carried 3 times for 21 yards and Ledbetter had another 21 yards.
Once the offense got the lead the defense took over and never looked back. Led by Adams’ five tackles and one sack, Godwin’s 4.5 tackles, and Scarlett’s four tackles for a loss, the defense was in total control and help Jacksonville to 34 total yards and forced three turnovers.
The defense even produced points right at the end of the first half when Jacksonville tried to pass. With pressure from Scarlett, Penfield stepped in front of the pass and dashed 70 yards for the second score of the game.
The final score was set up when Adams flew through the line, hit the quarterback, forcing a fumble and recovering it himself. After that, Brent ran for 14 yards on back-to-back carries to set up the score. Off play action, Ledbetter hit Riggs for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
The Junior Hornets play again Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m., against North Little Rock Police Athletic League at Maumelle High School.
