Junior Hornets overwhelm field at Lake Hamilton meet

HOT SPRINGS — The Bryant Junior Hornets resumed their winning ways with a dominating victory at the Lake Hamilton Invitational at Oaklawn Park Saturday. With three of the top four and eight of the top 17, they scored a total 28 points, which was a whopping 107 points ahead of runner-up Lake Hamilton (135). Twenty-three teams and 304 runners completed the 2.09 mile race.

Decatur Austin led the Junior Hornets, placing second in a time of 11:34. Dawson Oakley (3rd in 11:35), Michael Higgs (4th in 11:36), Colby Harvey (9th in 12:04), Chris Barrientos (10th in 12:09), Henry Terry (11th in 12:14), Ricky Barrientos (14th in 12:19), and Edgar Tejada (17th in 12:24) rounded out the team’s finishers who placed in the top 20.

“That was our best meet of the year, which is saying something,” stated Bryant coach Steve Oury. “Austin, Oakley, and Higgs all worked together really well and ran very smart races. These guys have a chance to be special if they will stick with it in the years to come.

“Coach Deanna Porter at Bryant Middle School and Coach Denise Smith at Bethel are both doing a great job,” he added. “Also, my student intern, Caleb Parker, has been a huge help with the freshmen boys. He runs with them on most days and has been a tremendous help, as has Coach Debbie Clark.”
