After winning two games last weekend, the Bryant Hornets 9-10 year old football team has advanced to the Central Arkansas Youth Football League Super Bowl to be held today at 3:15 p.m., at Maumelle High School.
The team, coached by Tim Adams with assistance from Greg Riggs, Lee Ledbetter, Eric Nicholas and D.J. Miller, includes Hart Penfield, Will Hanson, Gavin Burton, Braden Robinson, Aiden Adams, Hayden Purdy, Ryan Riggs, Turner Seelinger, Christian Cain, Hayden Brent, Cameron Scarlett, Austin Ledbetter, Brayden Godwin, Tyler Nicholas, Logan Pritchard, Trey Miller, Bryce Rankin, Kory Shelnut, and Zach Feimster
Last Saturday, the Hornets beat the Maumelle Orange 40-0 on a day when they seemed a little “out of it,” according to Coach Adams. Christian Cain got the scoring started with a 36-yard run and ended on a Will Hanson 4-yard run. The defense held the Orange to 3 yards total offense and created two turnovers. That set up a rematch with the Central Arkansas Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon.
Bryant’s offense was slow and not sharp turning the ball over four times but the defense stepped up and held the Grizzlies to minus-30 yards total offense, created three turnovers while running their scoreless streak to 31 straight quarters.
Once the offense got going, Christian Cain was used as a decoy more than a runner as Austin Ledbetter got things going with a 3-yard touchdown run behind Kory Shelnut, Turner Seelinger, Zach Feimster, Braden Robinson, Hayden Purdy, Logan Pritchard and Trey Miller. That would prove to be the game winner.
The win ran the Hornets’ record to 11-0 and earned them a chance to bring a Super Bowl championship back to Bryant.
The Super Bowl is a match up with the Sherwood Black Wolves who upset the Jacksonville Maroon 28-16 last Sunday.
