For the third week in a row, the Bryant Hornets junior varsity defense made a late goal line stand. In the previous weeks, those stands preserved a victory. On Monday night, the stand set up a winning touchdown drive as the Hornets defeated the North Little Rock JV, 14-10.[more]
The offense got the ball back at its own 5 yard-line, trailing 10-7, with about 1:30 left. The Hornets drove the length of the field. Quarterback Austin Powell completed key passes to Devon Sears, Tyler Jamison and Jacob Powell.
“Tyler caught a great 34-yard flag route to get us to the one-inch line,” recounted Hornets assistant coach Jason Hay. “Austin Powell sneaked it in on the second try form the goal line for the final touchdown."
North Little Rock scored first in the game, taking advantage of a muffed punt that gave the Charging Wildcats possession at the Bryant 9. They scored on the next play.
The Hornets tied it in the second quarter on a touchdown run by Jacob Powell.
Before the half was over, North Little Rock added a field goal and Bryant had an attempt at 3 fall short.
“It was a defensive struggle in the second half,” Hay said who mentioned that Jesse Johnson and Cameron Price had interceptions for the Hornets.
North Little Rock finally got a drive together and reached the 5 before the Hornets held, taking over on downs to set up the winning march.
Now 5-0, the Hornets JV hosts Sheridan’s JV on Monday, Oct. 11.
