The Bryant Hornets junior varsity racked up 12 hits in an 11-1 win over the Sheridan JV[more] at Bryant High School Field Thursday.
Ty Harris, Alex Shurtleff and Blaine Knight combined on a three-hitter over four innings for the Hornets. Meanwhile, the top four batters in the Bryant order combined to go 8 for 10. Drew Tipton, Austin Caldwell, Evan Lee and Jason Hastings each had two hits, as did Dalton Holt, who drove in three runs.
Sheridan’s lone run came in the first on three walks and an error before Harris settled in and struck out the side. He would fan the side in the second as well.
Shurtleff worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third after a single, a double and a walk. He too struck out the side along the way.
Knight fanned two more in the fourth, pitching around a hit batsman and a two-out single. The only out that didn’t come on strikes was a foul pop to Hastings at first to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
By that time, the Hornets had compiled a 6-1 lead. In the home first, they scored four times. Consecutive singles by Caldwell, Lee and Hastings filled the sacks for Chase Tucker, who was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. With two out, Holt came through with the big blow, a bases-clearing triple on a liner to left.
In the second, Tipton cracked a triple to right and, after Lee walked, Hastings drove a double to right to drive both home.
A five-run fourth made it a run-rule win. Tipton ignited the uprising with a lead-off single to left. Caldwell singled him to third then Lee smacked a double to plate Tipton. Justin Emmerling’s single to right knocked in two, making it 9-1.
Tucker kept the inning going with a double and Harrison Dale’s sacrifice fly plated Emmerling. After Tucker advanced on a passed ball, Holt walked and Dylan Hurt drove in the game-ending run.
The Bryant junior varsity will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2, at Texarkana.
