The Bryant Hornets continued to roll towards the State Tournament with a 5-0 win over[more] the Pulaski Academy Bruins Monday night at Bryant Stadium.
Junior Bryce Denker scored two goals. Blake Reed, Justin Travis and Corey Laisure each scored as well as the Hornets improved to 17-2-1 on the season. It was their third shutout in the last four matches and 12th of the season.
Less than three minutes into the contest, Reed got his goal off an assist from Dylan Wolf.
“I thought we played pretty good for probably 30 of the first 40 minutes,” commented Bryant coach Jason Hay. “We kind of let down. You know, you score that early goal and it kind of lulls you into a false sense of security, I think.”
The Hornets added to their lead with 25:09 left in the first half. That’s when Denker scored off a feed from Jeremy Anderson. At 13:17, Travis shot one by the keeper with Denker getting the assist, making it 3-0 at the half.
Denker started the scoring in the second half at the 20:38 mark. Wolf notched his second assist.
At 8:23, Laisure put the finishing touches on the scoring with an assist from Evan Caddy.
“I thought we played better,” Hay stated. “It was good for us, to get ready for the rest of the week.”
Bryant closes out the regular season with South Conference matches at Lake Hamilton tonight and at home against El Dorado this Friday.
The Hornets, 11-1 in league play, are vying for a conference championship and a first-round bye at the Class 7A State Tournament, which begins May 9 at North Little Rock.
