TEXARKANA — As expected, sophomore Tyler Green, the top golfer for the Bryant Hornets in 2009, led the team in its 2010 debut at a tournament in Texarkana on Thursday. The scores, however, were not where Green, the Hornets or head coach Jim Pennington figured they’d be.
Of course, one tournament does not a season make.[more]
Green carded an 81 with freshman Chase Thornton turning in a round of 86 followed by Austin Harmon (92), Payne Roberts (94) and Brandon Crosby (99) in Bryant’s top five.
Benton won the tournament with a total of 312, led by individual medalists Nate Smith and Austin Eoff. They finished with rounds of 2-under-par 70.
“It was extremely hot and humid,” Pennington noted. “I think it got to the kids a little bit. They were very disappointed with how they played. Hopefully, we got the bad match over with. We will not shoot that high again.”
El Dorado was second to Benton with a team score of 313 followed by Lake Hamilton and Texarkana at 340 then Bryant at 353. The Hornets edged out Hope (355) with Sheridan’s group combining on a 377.
Bryant will play again on Monday at Conway with the girls joining in for their opening action.
