Connor Tatum smacked an inside-the-park home run, Evan Lee tripled and both Austin Kelly and Garrett Misenheimer had doubles as the Bryant Hornets junior varsity baseball team swamped the Lake Hamilton Wolves’ JV, 9-1, on Tuesday night.
Alex Shurtleff pitched four innings as the Hornet starter, allowing a run on two hits in the first inning before retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. Jason Hastings pitched a scoreless fifth, ending it with a pair of strikeouts.
Lake Hamilton got its run on Ryan Sinclair’s double and a two-out single by Hunter Kolby. The only baserunner off Shurtleff after that came on a two-out walk in the third.
Bryant grabbed the lead with a six-run third. Jake East led off with a walk and sprinted home on Lee’s three-bagger. With two out, Nick Kehrees worked a walk and Dylan Hurt singled to right-center to make it 2-1. Tatum followed with a drive into the gap in right-center that went all the way to the wall. He circled the bases for a three-run homer.
And the Hornets weren’t finished. Kelly sliced a double inside the line in right and scored on a solid single by Logan Allen to make it 6-1.
In the fourth, Lee reached on an error and stole second. Blake Patterson singled and stole second as well setting the stage for Misenheimer’s shot to left-center for a two-run double. He tagged and went to third on Kehrees’ fly to right then scored when Hurt’s grounder to short was booted.
