The Bryant Hornets wrestling team took top honors at the season-opening Bryant Invitational at[more] the Bryant Middle School gym on Saturday. Bryant finished with 183 points with Central Arkansas Christian finishing second at 160 and Cabot third at 148.5. North Little Rock was fourth (77) followed by Bismarck (51), Little Rock Episcopal (49), Benton (35), Arkansas School for the Blind (30) and Glen Rose (28).
Bryant wrestlers won individual titles in four of the 13 weight classifications, Hornets were runners-up in two others, third in four and fourth in another.
O’Dell Lee, the defending State champion in the 189-pound category, won Saturday in the 195-pound category, defeating Bismarck’s Shelby Orr in the final with a pin at the 2:41 mark.
Chance Phillips won the final at the 220-pound class over Marcus Lindsey while Brandon Powell defeated Preston Barnett of CAC in the 120-pound category. Zach Simmons of Bryant pinned Colton Butler of CAC in the finals of the 126-pound class.
In the 170-pound class, Bryant’s Austin May was defeated in the final by CAC’s Chase Almond. At 182, Adam Watts of CAC pinned Bryant’s Colton Caviness.
In the consolation finals, Bryant’s Chris Baldwin defeated Episcopal’s Ethan Lewis at 132 pounds with Brett Blend pinning Episcopal’s Sam Thoma at 145. In the 152-pound category, Harley Burks of Bryant defeated John Michael Ekdahl of Episcopal and, at 220 pounds, Bryant’s Drew Allen topped CAC’s Jared Kingery.
Ben Freeman of Bryant took on Cabot’s Nick Patterson in the 120-pound class with Patterson prevailing.
