While other retailers anticipate the holiday shopping season between Thanksgiving and Christmas, trick-or-treaters make October the hottest month at Goodwill Industries of Arkansas.
“Goodwill is an excellent place to find bargains year-round, but it’s an especially great resource when you are looking to create a unique costume at a reasonable price,” says Susan Crossley, director of marketing and communications. “Since most people only wear their Halloween costumes once, it makes perfect sense to save a few dollars on the purchase,” Crossley says.
For a fraction of the cost that many retailers are charging for costumes, Goodwill shoppers can put together popular Halloween get-ups or one-of-a-kind creations. With items easily found on Goodwill’s racks, shoppers can become pirates, pop-stars and karate kids for well under $20.
Here a few of the Halloween costume ideas from clothing and accessory items that can be found on the shelves at Goodwill:
• A donated pair of overalls, a flannel shirt and a straw hat can turn any trick-or-treater into a scarecrow;
• A well-worn leather jacket, white T-shirt, and a pair of straight-leg jeans can transform the average Joe into the Fonz and right back to the 1950s;
• Retro clothing makes it easy to dress up like a cast member from “That 70’s Show”;• A pinstripe suit and a classic fedora turn the young or old into a gangster, or with a different hat, one can become Charlie Chaplin;

“Our shoppers can be pretty imaginative. The trick is doing a bit of cutting and pasting or stitching, then letting your imagination go wild with accessories,” says Crossley.
