CABOT — The Bryant Lady Hornets freshman volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a hotly contested match against the Cabot North Lady Panthers on Monday.
Bryant surged to a 25-14 win in the first game of the best-of-three match but Cabot North rallied to edge the Lady Hornets 21-25 and 13-15 to escape with a victory.
Raven Loveless led Bryant with five kills. Jad’n Nichols had four. Brittney Warner picked up two kills and Reagan Dabbs one.
“It was a good start to our season even though we didn’t come out on top,” said Lady Hornets coach Julie Long. “We all learned something from the match, especially me. I told the girls after the game, the loss was my fault. I made a few coaching errors that I will not let happen again.
“The girls did fight hard but we played a little inconsistent,” she added. “I was proud of their first game.”
Kyla Baker was good on all 14 of her serves for the Lady Hornets. Regan Ryan had 12 good serves in 14 attempts. Tori Allen and Loveless got in all seven of their serves with Loveless contributing an ace. Ashlyn Lee had an ace as well.
Baker led the team with seven digs.
The Lady Hornets return to action at Lake Hamilton on Thursday.
