Crowder survives with 19-18 win in slugfest versus Faulkner State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — With both teams playing as if their seasons depended on it — which was actually the case — the Crowder Community College Roughriders scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to forge a 19-18 victory over Faulkner State Community College in a wild game at the National Junior College World Series today.[more]

The Roughriders, with a number of Arkansas products including Bryant’s Tyler Sawyer and David Guarno along with Benton’s Colby Roberts, advance to play in another elimination game on Wednesday at 3 p.m. (MDT) against the loser of tonight’s game between College of Southern Nevada and Iowa Western Community College. Crowder lost to the Iowa team on Sunday in their first-round contest.

Sawyer, who has been in the Crowder starting rotation, may be the starting hurler in Wednesday’s game after Scott Elitzky, Austin Brown and Dan Kickham pitched today.

The Roughriders accumulated 26 hits in the contest, scoring five times in the first and seven times in the seventh as they built a 15-9 lead. Faulkner State, which finished its season with a 38-21 record, rallied for nine runs in the top of the eighth so Crowder needed three in the home half to tie it.

After Faulkner was blanked in the top of the ninth, Crowder won it in the home half on an error that allowed John Neill to reach and an RBI double by Kendall San Paolo.

It was San Paolo’s fourth hit of the game. Roberts also had four hits and scored three times.
