The Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team will host the 2010 7A-Central Junior High Conference post-season tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
The teams in the league will play in a single-elimination tournament at the Bryant Middle School gym.
The tournament will take on a theme in conjunction with the annual Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure which will be held in Little Rock that morning, according to Lady Hornets coach Monica Parish.[more]
“Since we cannot go to the Race for the Cure, we’re bringing it here,” she explained. “We’ll have a banner up on the wall and we’re going to have little pink cards that say ‘In Honor Of . . . ‘ You can write down anyone that you know of. We’re not going to limit it to breast cancer. So it’s just any fight with cancer.
“The biggest thing is just to get this out to our ninth grade girls,” Parish added. “I’m not talking about just Bryant. I’m talking about all nine conference teams. I sent the coaches emails, I told them what’s going on. So, we’ve told all the teams to be ready with names. We’ll have a little bucket there for donations but they’re not required. All donations there will go to the Race for the Cure.”
The theme will go beyond that as more and more of those involved with the tournament have picked up on the theme.
“Our conference t-shirts have a pink ribbon on the back and it’s all going to be pink and white just for that, no royal blue,” Parish noted. “The officials are all going to have pink whistles and pink lanyards. We’ve got some moms doing pink cookies for the hospitality room. The coaches’ gifts will have a pink clipboard with a pink ribbon on it.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us because, yes, we teach serves and we teach passes and we teach fundamentals but teaching the game of life through athletics is what I’m here for,” she concluded.
