LITTLE ROCK — Whitney Butler earned an 8-3 win over Samantha Cook of Mount St. Mary Academy to[more] highlight a Bryant’s tennis match against the 7A/6A-Central Conference rival Belles at Rebsamen Park on Tuesday.
Mount St. Mary players won three of the four varsity matches, however, and, in boys competition, Little Rock Catholic swept the varsity contests against the Hornets.
Butler has lost just once this season at No. 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, Callie Hogancamp battled Mount’s Mary Menz but wound up suffering a 4-8 loss.
Meanwhile, both doubles matches needed extra games to decide. At No 1, Kristen Dudley and Autumn Rouse of Bryant would up absorbing a 7-9 loss to Layton Dudley and Cece Blanton. At No. 2, Allie Hogancamp and Sara Lequieu suffered the same fate by the same score against Madeline Whitace and Annie Carter.
For the boys, Catholic won both singles match 8-0 with Michael Towne defeating Bryant’s Cade Howard at No. 1 and Reid Birch prevailing over Bryant’s Nick Ross at No. 2.
In doubles, the Rockets continued to show their prowess as Haynes Burnside and Adam Korenblat downed Dalton Lane and Lane Ricardo, 8-1, at No. 1. Catholic’s Adam Nick and Josh Brown defeated Spencer Sullivan and Noah Hargis, 8-0, at No. 2.
“I thought all the girls played real well even though Whitney was the only one able to pull out a win,” commented Bryant coach Steve Wilson. “Callie had a very tough opponent and both girls doubles teams went the extra game. For the boys, Cade played every game tough.”
In other matches, Emma Patrick teamed with Butler to defeat Porter Pryor and Merli Emsinger, 8-6. Dudley and Rouse won a doubles match, 6-2 and Allie Hogancamp and Lequieu teamed up on an 8-6 win over Alex Glenn and Catherine Clark.
Mount’s Meg Bumpers won a singles match 8-1 over Erica Pounders.
For the boys, Catholic won three other doubles matches. Russell Gordon and Joseph Wren defeated the Hornets’ Caleb Hixon and Nick Ross; Wyatt Miller and Nelson McCain edged Howard and Ricardo, 10-8; and Jackson Gammil and Michael Hewitt topped Sullivan and Hargis, 8-3.
Bryant returns to Rebsamen for its next match on Thursday against Van Buren.
