PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Travis Wood of Bryant pitched six innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one[more] hit, in his start of the season for the Chicago Cubs today. Wood left with a 1-0 lead and the Cubs held on for a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He walked two and struck out four. The only hit he surrendered was a Clint Barmes double with one out in the third inning.
In the top of the third, Wood cracked a one-out single, advanced on a groundout by David DeJesus then scored on a two-out single by Starlin Castro.
It stayed 1-0 until the ninth when new Cub right fielder Nate Shierholtz ripped a two-run homer to center. In the bottom of the inning, the Pirates rallied for two runs off Cubs closer Carlos Marmol. They had the tying run at third and the winning run at first with no one out but Marmol worked out of the jam to get the save.
