LOUISVILLE — Travis Wood got a little run support on Saturday night and picked up his first win of the season for the AAA Louisville Bats of the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Wood, a Bryant High School graduate, pitched six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits without a walk while striking out seven in the Bats’ 16-5 romp over the Rochester Red Wings of the Minnesota Twins organization. He’s now 1-3 with a 4.38 earned run average in five starts this season.[more]
On Saturday, Wood had a phenomenal start, striking out the side in the first then fanning two of the three batters he faced in the second while the Bats were building a 5-0 lead. Rochester’s first hit was a one-out double by Matt Tolbert in the top of the third but he was stranded when Wood fanned Allan de San Miguel and got Jason Repko to fly to right.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bats doubled the margin to 10-0.
Wood retired the first batter he faced in the top of the fourth then surrendered a pair of singles before getting a pop to third for the second. Rochester then put together three hits in a row to score four times.
The Bats answered with a six-run burst in the bottom of the inning to make it 16-4.
An infield hit and a double added the Red Wings’ last run in the bottom of the fifth then Wood retired the last six batters he faced to finish up his six innings.
He threw 89 pitches, 63 of them for strikes.
