After opening with a tremendous surge, the Bryant White Lady Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School fell victim to a rally by the Lake Hamilton Lady Wolves, who eked out a 2-1 victory in the opening volleyball match of the season for both teams on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The Lady Hornets won the first match 25-9 but fell 12-25 in the second and, in a tight final game, lost 13-15.
“We started off great,” acknowledged Bryant coach DeAnna Ward. “The first set was impressive. The girls worked really well together.
“Celena Martin served points 1-5 with two aces,” she related. “Ivory Russ and Grace Camferdam also had two aces. We were very aggressive at the net. Mekeycia Baker and Ivory each add two kills and two blocks. Lexi Brown had four assists.”
Of the second set, Ward said, “We had trouble on serve receive and just couldn’t get going.
“It was the first game of the season and I wanted to see several different combinations of players on the court,” she noted.
“The third set, we missed several serves giving up some easy points,” the coach said. “We just didn’t finish the job.”
Bryant White is set to return to action this Thursday at home against Conway Blue.
“I saw some really good things on the court and I saw some things we need to work on,” Ward said of the opener. “Hopefully, we will correct some of those in practice and compete strong against Conway on Thursday.”
