NORTH LITTLE ROCK — The Bryant White Lady Hornets eighth grade volleyball team of Bryant Middle School may still be looking for its first win but, on Saturday, they made a run at the championship of a tournament at North Little Rock.
The team includes Mariah Aguilar, Jayla Anderson, Haley Collins, Claire Henderson, Madison Krick, Taylor Lindberg, Brittany McDonald, Makayla Nguyen, Alexis Parsley, Jessica Reese, Charli Sahr, Sarah Shepard, Abby Staton, and Jordan Tarvin.[more]
The Lady Hornets, whose five losses have all been extremely close, won three games in pool play, defeating Rose City, Little Rock Episcopal and Maumelle #2. They split pool play with Sylvan Hills and came out as the No. 1 seed from the pool.
In the first round of bracket play in the Gold Division, the Lady Hornets knocked off previously unbeaten Ridge Road, 12-25, 25-15, 15-11 to advance to the semifinals. There they ran into Maumelle #1 and suffered a 20-25, 17-25 defeat to end their run.
“We ran out of steam,” stated Lady Hornets coach DeAnna Ward.
Against Ridge Road, Anderson had three kills, Lindberg two and Sahr one.
In service, Sahr was 14 of 15 with an ace and Lindberg was 9 of 10. Aguilar was 5 of 7, Nguyen 3 of 4 and Staton 2 of 3. Aguilar and Nguyen each contributed an ace. Staton led the team with six assists.
Against Maumelle, Sahr led with three kills while Lindbert was 10 of 11 on serves with an ace. Staton was 3 of 4 and contributed an assist.
The Lady Hornets will make their next bid at a regular-season win when they host Cabot North on Monday, Sept. 20.
