The Bryant White Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School kept their unbeaten record[more] intact by holding on for a 39-35 win over Cabot South’s Junior Panthers at the BMS gym Tuesday evening.
After falling behind 12-7 by the end of the first quarter, the Hornets outscored the Panthers 11-2 in the second quarter to surge into the lead. The 18-14 lead at the break was key as the two teams played evenly in the second half. Bryant led 29-24 going into the fourth quarter.
Romen Martin led the team with 19 points. Brandon Harris and Jonathan Allen added 6 each with Hayden Knowles and Tyler Kelly pitching in with 4 apiece.
“(Cabot South has) a really good guard that got loose some in the first half in transition so we got down early,” noted Hornets coach Heath Long. “However, we had Jake East face-guard him after the first quarter and he did a great job.
“There was a stretch where we really shot too many jumpshots,” he added. “Once we started doing a better job of getting the ball inside, we had some more success.
“We also need to do a better job of closing the game than we did. We allowed them to make a little run and make the score closer than it should have been.”
Now 8-0, the Hornets return to action at Benton on Monday, Jan. 14.
