BENTON — It's an inspiration to all old high school basketball players that had to get a real job after their playing days.
In Saline County, there was nothing like seeing the Bryant Hornets and the Benton Panthers play basketball against each other back in the day. The Hornets won a AAA state championship in 1981 and the Panthers came as close as runners-up a couple of years ago. To get to see that again would be priceless.[more]
It had all the makings of a rivalry that became second to no other. Jeff Self, Brad Goshien, Kinnis Pledger, Junior Curtis and many other popular names in Bryant and Benton basketball past will be on hand again when the second annual ERA Benefit Basketball game at Panther Arena at Benton High School begins at 6 p.m., this Saturday, Oct. 16.
"Be there early," said benefit coordinator Oveta Pledger.
Joe Treat, legendary Bryant head basketball coach, led the Hornets against Coach Tim Hall and the Panthers the first time the event was held two years ago. The two most promient players from both schools were Bryant's Willie Cutts and Benton's Junior Curtis — both could score from anywhere, but their teammates got them to the top.
Cost to see the renewed rivalry between the old timers is $5 at the door with proceeds going to the Ralph Bunche Community.
