To finish the 2012 season tonight, the Bryant Hornets freshman team takes on the Benton Panthers freshman team and, fittingly enough, a share of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference championship will be on the line.
Prior to that, the Bryant White eighth grade team will take on Benton’s eighth grade team, starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Hornets freshmen come into the game tied with Cabot South for the league lead. Each has one loss. Bryant’s lone loss was to Cabot South. Cabot South’s lone loss was to Benton.
The Panthers, who led the league most of the season, is a game behind with two setbacks. Those losses were both by one point in back-to-back games. Benton lost to North Little Rock, 15-14, on Oct. 11, then lost to Conway Blue, 14-13, on Oct. 18. The Panthers bounced back last week with a 22-7 win over Lake Hamilton.
They can still share in the conference title with a win over Bryant and a Cabot South loss to rival Cabot North tonight.
Bryant comes into the game riding a six-game winning streak after a 30-0 win over Conway Blue, which ended at halftime due to lightning and heavy rain.
Though the freshman teams are different every year, Bryant teams have won the last eighth meetings with Benton teams including last year’s 35-0 win. The last time a Panthers freshman squad beat Bryant was 2003. Since the two teams began playing in 1986 (before that, there were two Benton freshman teams), the Panthers have a 17-12-1 record.
