Jeff Mayfield, M.D., of Bryant has been nominated for the 2012 Fay Boozman Award by the[more] Arkansas Physicians Resource Council, a division of the Arkansas Family Council.
Mayfield, a family practice physician at the Baptist Health Family Clinic in Bryant, is a 1983 graduate of the University of Arkansas College of Medicine.
According to the Council, the Fay Boozman Award is bestowed annually to an Arkansas doctor who “exemplifies the strong Christian faith and commitment to community service and public health of Dr. Fay Boozman.“
Boozman, (1946 – 2005), an ophthalmologist, directed the Arkansas Department of Health from 1999-2005. He served two terms in the Arkansas Senate and ran for the United States Senate in 1998. He founded and operated a medical clinic in Rogers.
“Dr. Boozman was a leader in his church and community,” said a Council representative. “All who knew him recognized his commitment to Jesus Christ and his desire to serve others. Fay was a friend and supporter of the work of the Arkansas Physicians Resource Council. His sudden death as a result of a farming accident in 2005 stunned us, and broke our hearts. He is deeply missed. He was, as one of his many admirers has said, ‘one of the good guys.’"
Mayfield was nominated by Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan with recommendations from several of the doctor’s friends and clients.
The Family Council is scheduled to announce the winner of the Boozman Award next week.
