Bryant First United Methodist to host health and wellness fair

Bryant First United Methodist Church is hosting the first Saline County Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday, June 14 at 508 N. Reynolds Road in the church’s Family Life Center, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

Free and open to the public, more than 30 exhibitors are scheduled to participate and offer onsite screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, prostate cancer PSAs, weight, body mass index, glucose, as well as mental health needs.

Deletebloodcancer.org will be performing bone marrow screenings (as a cheek swab) for potential donors for 9-year-old Teecumpsy Wiggins. Participants can also be added to a donor database.

For the first time in Arkansas, Kidney TRUST will be at a health fair giving the opportunity for free, rapid screenings that identify individuals who have signs of kidney impairment. More than 40,000 people have been screened since the program began in 2007.

Along with learning their screening results onsite, participants benefit from a personal education session to explain their results and any individual risk factors, receive materials that offer additional education about CKD and its prevention, and are encouraged to seek medical follow-up as appropriate.

The Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation will also be on hand doing prostate cancer screenings. Men between the ages of 40 and 75 are encouraged to take advantage of the free preventative-health care services, which will include a discussion on risk and benefits of screening and a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Men with a family history of prostate cancer and men that are African-American are in high-risk populations for prostate cancer and are eligible for screening at age 35.

The health fair will also have a disaster preparedness component. The Bryant Police Department, Fire Department, Saline Memorial MedTran Ambulance Service, Saline County Office of Emergency Management, the American Red Cross and Poison Control will be on hand to answer your questions. Med Flight will land on the back parking lot of the church during the event.

Childrens’ activities are included, as well as free workout classes, featuring local Beachbody, yoga and Zumba fitness instructors. Healthy snacks and water will also be provided.
